Keats & Syrah

Franz and Martina Weninger expanded their family Austrian winery in 1992 by hopping across the border into Southern Hungary, and now son Franz Reinhard Weninger and wife Petra run the second project in Sopron-Balf, on the Austria/Hungary border. This wine is from the oldest Syrah vineyard in Hungary, the soils rich with gneiss (a glittering rock) and mineral rich schist.

A beautiful expression of Syrah, peppery and savoury, a bright acid core, with flashes of black olive. Chosen for us by sommelier Lionel Periner (studying for his Master Sommelier qualification) during a cracking lunch at Adam’s Restaurant in Birmingham. The John Keats quote on the label from the poem Endymion gave this Keats lover an added reason to enjoy it, as it sailed across both duck and turbot dishes — an assured choice from a top sommelier.
